Dream Squirrel Band Branding
While taking a Type and Image course, I was assigned to create a brand for a hypothetical musical group called Dream Squirrel. I took inspiration from the band’s song list and created layered collages that served as visuals for my vinyl cover and tour posters. I chose to create a collage for the front and back of my album cover because the band’s music genre was very diverse and layered. With that being said, I wanted to include a lot picture cut outs as a way to represent the titles of the songs, while also recreating the complexity and depth of the album. This project allowed me to create imagery that could help contextualize the album’s songs and serve as the band’s trademark. I also was able to gain more knowledge on the creative processes designers in the music industry use when working on their own projects.
Process
Much of the process work for this project involved moodboarding boarding and recording descriptive words that correlated with the songs that were featured on the band’s set list. Once I was able to get a good understanding of the genre and overall aesthetic of the band, I was able to create a logo, drafted album covers, and a color palette that reflected their brand identity. I chose to use bright and pastel colors for the color palette as a way to represent the playful nature of the album.

For the design of my final deliverables, I included picture cut outs as a way to recreate the complexity of the album and represent the depth of the song titles. This project allowed me to create imagery that could help contextualize the album’s songs and serve as the band’s trademark. I also was able to gain more knowledge on the creative processes designers in the music industry use when working on their own projects.
